A Special Education Needs (SEN) teacher or support assistant works with pupils who have learning difficulties, behavioural or emotional problems and or physical or sensory disabilities.
SEN pupils needs vary day to day so this requires teachers, teaching assistants and learning support to be understanding and versatile. SEN teachers can work with pupils with dyslexia or dyscalculia (similar to dyslexia but for numbers), autism, severe epilepsy, moderate, severe or profound learning difficulties, visual or hearing impairments, mobility problems, behavioural challenges or psychiatric problems.
Typical responsibilities of a SEN teacher/ SEN teaching assistant include:
- assessing the individual learning needs of pupils
- evaluating and reporting pupils’ progress to teachers, carers, healthcare professionals
- assisting with the personal care needs of pupils
- coping with challenging behaviour and diffusing difficult situations
