The King of Grime helps black students with the Stormzy Scholarship.

The media and the news these past few weeks have been full of education. A-Level results day and GSCE results day. But what this blog post is focused on is university and the ‘Stormzy Scholarship’ in particular.

Who is Stormzy?

A lot of you already know who Stormzy is, but if you do not, Stormzy is an English Rapper who has won multiple awards such as Best Grime Act in 2014 and a MOBO Awards is 2015. His debut album, Gang Signs & Prayer was the first grime album to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart, in 2017. So, he is very successful. Stormzy has always been someone to use his platform and status to voice his opinion on political situations. Some of you may be aware of his performers at the Brit Awards 2018 where he heavily mentioned Grenfell Tower, if not you can watch it here.

What is the Stormzy Scholarship?

Stormzy doesn't’ just stop at tweeting and speaking about political issues. He has very recently decided to launch the Stormzy Scholarship. Stormzy has announced that he will fund two black British students to go to the university of Cambridge this year and two next year. The Stormzy Scholarship will pay for their tuition fees and provide a maintenance grant for up to four years of an undergraduate course. Stormzy announced the launch of his new scholarship on Instagram which you can see here.

Why is it needed?

This is needed because black people are a minority that are still underrepresented at the top universities. Cambridge has been criticised for not admitting many pupils from Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds. The Financial Times found that some Cambridge colleges didn't take in any black students from 2012 to 2016 and only admitted 58 black students on to undergraduate courses in 2017. Stormzy wants black students to know that if you are academically brilliant you shouldn't think that just because you come from a certain community that studying at one of the highest universities in the world isn’t possible because It is. Or that you won’t ‘fit in’ because you will. This is an opportunity for underprivileged black students that get into Cambridge to be able to go as previously the cost is one of the reasons that would have stopped them.

Stormzy Says:

There are so many young black kids all over the country who have the level of academic excellence to study at a university such as Cambridge - however we are still under represented at leading universities. We, as a minority, have so many examples of black students who have excelled at every level of education throughout the years. I hope this scholarship serves as a small reminder that if young black students wish to study at one of the best universities in the world, then the opportunity is yours for the taking - and if funding is one of the barriers, then we can work towards breaking that barrier down.’

The importance of using your platform:

Celebrities will have thousands and thousands of fans, followers on social media etc yet why do only a handful use their platform for good? More artists and celebrities should be like Stormzy and use their platform to help others, encourage others, raise awareness, voice their opinion on political situations. If you have got the followers, why not use them? We at Link3 love Stormzy and what he has done!
