What is an unqualified teacher?

Teachers who haven’t achieved QTS, for whatever reason, are classed as unqualified. While you can teach in independent schools, academies, and free schools in England without QTS, if you want to work in a state school, you’ll need to pass the qualification, although in many schools, you can train as you work. Unqualified teachers undertake the same roles as their qualified counterparts, including:

  • Supporting teaching a class of pupils

  • Ensuring that planning, preparation, recording, assessment and reporting meet pupils’ needs

  • Maintaining a positive ethos and core values of the school, both in and out of the classroom

  • Contributing to constructive teambuilding among teaching and non-teaching staff, parents and governors

  • Ensuring the current national conditions of employment for unqualified school teachers are met

  • Supporting pupils’ extra-curricular activities or additional studies
