What does a SENCo do?

Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENDCos) are responsible for the day-to-day implementation of the school’s SEND policy. All mainstream schools must appoint a teacher to be their SENCo, who will coordinate additional support for pupils with SEND and liaise with parents, teachers and other professionals who are involved with them. SENCOs are responsible for meeting the additional needs of pupils with:

  • Mild to moderate learning difficulties

  • Specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia

  • Physical disabilities

  • Hearing or visual impairment

  • Emotional or behavioural problems
